If Emsisoft Emergency Kit scan detects any malware or potentially unwanted programs on your computer, it will display and preselect all findings.

You can either quarantine or delete selected objects, or deselect objects you do not want to be touched, or that you need more information about before deciding. We recommend you quarantine objects in most cases, as this option will completely disable the malware by wrapping it in an encrypted container. It will render the malware harmless, while allowing it to be analyzed by one of our technicians if needed or restored on the off chance that it is a false positive. No files are sent unless you choose to do so.

If you opt to delete instead, you will irreversibly delete the detected objects – so only do this if you are absolutely certain the files are malicious.

Very rarely, a scan detects an item that cannot be automatically removed without the risk of damaging your system. If this occurs, you will get a notification to contact one of our qualified and trained malware removal experts at support@emsisoft.com. Follow their instructions to safely get back a clean system.

The “Settings” section, found using its link directly below the blue Scan tile, lets you define how Emsisoft Emergency Kit will operate, especially in regards to your privacy. You can join the Emsisoft Anti-Malware Network, our cloud-based database that stores information about all types of programs, good and bad, and checks them in real time. By opting in, you give the program permission to collect anonymous information about malware it finds on your computer, which helps improve our products’ overall malware detection capabilities. This also greatly increases detection accuracy, reducing false detections for example.

A quarantine re-scan is by default performed every time new signature updates are downloaded. If it ever happens that you have a wrongly detected object in quarantine, a re-scan with corrected detection signatures will ask you to restore the quarantined objects back to its original place.

Changing the update feed to enable beta updates should only be done if you are an advanced user and want to take advantage of the latest untested software updates. If you would like to get more insights, please sign up for our beta tester program. The delayed update feed will lack the most current protection and features, but in all but the most rare cases uses exactly the same downloaded signature updates that the stable and beta update feeds use. The delayed version is specifically for high-availability installations, such as businesses, where a program version that has proven itself more thoroughly is required.

The proxy settings button will allow configuration of network proxy details so Emsisoft Emergency Kit can utilize a proxy-controlled network connection.

News notifications appear during updates, and are for educational purposes while the product is updating, or just for the sake of learning.

The user interface language selection will change the language the program is presented in to the language chosen immediately upon clicking the language.

Emsisoft Emergency Kit uses the same scanner technology as Emsisoft Anti-Malware, which means it’s possible to build your own portable Emsisoft Emergency Kit using the existing components in the software.  Any missing resources will be downloaded.

To do so:

  1. Open Emsisoft Anti-Malware.
  2. Click the blue tab “Scan & Clean”
  3. Click “Emergency Kit Maker”
  4. Choose a destination.
  5. Using the “Save to” button, specify a portable device or folder on your hard drive to save the files to, such as a flash drive you’ve connected to the computer. Note that the files will be put directly in the folder selected, so you may wish to create an “EEK” folder for example, that is empty, to install to.
  6. Click the “Create Emergency Kit” button.

After the Emsisoft Emergency Kit has been created, it can be found in the destination specified in step 3. You can then use it to scan and clean computers of malware infections without having to download the entire package from our website. Your newly created kit includes the latest detection updates, and can be launched with the “Start Commandline Scanner” program found in the folder chosen.

Emsisoft Commandline Scanner, also available separately, offers the same functionality as Emsisoft Emergency Kit but without a graphical user interface. The tool is made for professional users and is perfect for carrying out automated batch jobs. It can easily be integrated into multi-engine scanning toolkits and its optionally-created log files are easy to parse.

To run Emsisoft Commandline Scanner, navigate to the folder Emsisoft Emergency Kit was unpacked to, by default C:\EEK\, and run the file “Start Commandline Scanner.exe”. It will display usage information when it is run in this way. To see an overview of available parameters you may also type “a2cmd /h” while in the folder this command prompt starts in. Emsisoft Commandline Scanner may also be launched directly by locating the “a2cmd.exe” file in the appropriate “bin” subfolder for the target computer’s bitness (32 / 64).

Note: Emsisoft Commandline Scanner must be run from an elevated (administrative) command prompt or script. When run via the “Start Commandline Scanner” program is used, this is taken care of for you, as well as selecting the appropriate bin subfolder for the computer’s bitness.

An overview of all the available a2cmd parameters are also available on its product information page.

The Emsisoft Emergency Kit scanner features the same powerful dual-scanner technology found in our flagship software, Emsisoft Anti-Malware. Use it to scan your PC that isn’t yet protected by Emsisoft Anti-Malware, and detect and remove viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, ransomware, potentially unwanted programs, bots and other malicious programs.

There are three different scan options to choose from:

  • Quick Scan – Scans only active programs and checks for Malware traces. Run a Quick Scan if you are sure that the system is clean (e.g. if you have a freshly installed operating system and want to complete setup quickly.)
  • Malware Scan – Scans all places that Malware typically infects. A Malware Scan is the best choice for most users. It’s fast and thoroughly examines the whole computer for any active Malware infections.
  • Custom Scan – All scanner settings can be manually set and stored for later use. This is particularly useful if you want to scan additional drives for any inactive Malware files.

If you would like to learn more about the scan types, please read this article.

Emsisoft Emergency Kit is a fully portable dual-engine cleaning toolkit that can be used to scan for and remove malware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) from your PC. It works well in conjunction with other antivirus software (see the note below) and can be used if you suspect that your computer is infected but your existing security solution is unable to deal with the threat.

Downloading Emsisoft Emergency Kit

You can download Emsisoft Emergency Kit here, or if you’re already using Emsisoft Anti-Malware, you can create one using that product via these instructions. It’s free for private use and is fully portable, which means no installation is required. Emsisoft Emergency Kit Pro is available for business and other for-profit use. The downloaded package unpacks to “C:\EEK” by default, or another specified destination of your choice. Because it is fully portable, you can keep it up to date on the computer, and copy it to a USB stick or other portable media as needed to use on other computers running supported Windows versions, which are listed on the Emsisoft Emergency Kit and Emsisoft Emergency Kit Pro product pages, linked above.

Note: If you don’t need the software anymore, just delete the whole folder and the shortcut at any time. If it refuses to delete due to a file in use, restart the computer to unload it and try again.

Running Emsisoft Emergency Kit

Double-click the ‘Start Emergency Kit Scanner’ program in the ‘C:\EEK’ or other folder the program was unpacked to. If Windows issues an alert and asks for your permission to run the program, allow it to run with elevated rights by clicking yes.

Also included is the Emsisoft Emergency Kit Commandline Scanner, usable via the ‘Start Commandline Scanner’ program if you prefer to use a command line interface. It will open an elevated command prompt where the a2cmd.exe program may be used for scanning. Information on using it will appear when the command prompt opens.

The software can also be started from a read-only device such as CD/DVD/BD or any write-protected USB-devices. While online updates are not possible in that case, the software itself remains fully functional for scanning and cleaning, without risking an accidental infection of the drive or disk it is on.

Note: Emsisoft Emergency Kit is redundant where Emsisoft Anti-Malware is present, and the two should not be run together on the same system. Emsisoft Anti-Malware is capable of everything and more that Emsisoft Emergency Kit is, other than Emsisoft Emergency Kit’s portability.

If you need to update Emsisoft Emergency Kit for distribution using a system where Emsisoft Anti-Malware is present, temporarily shut down Emsisoft Anti-Malware, update Emsisoft Emergency Kit, then start Emsisoft Anti-Malware again. Emsisoft Anti-Malware can be shut down by right-clicking its system tray icon in the corner of your screen, near the time. Starting it again can be done by restarting the computer, or using its Windows start menu icon.
