Hi ddmeltzer8. Backing up your data is a critical step in the fight against ransomware. No single protective measure is 100% perfect (even thought we’re working at to get there ;), so we always recommend to have a robust backup strategy in place. Unfortunately, too many homes and businesses only think about backups once it’s too late, so by backing up weekly and having Emsisoft Anti-Malware installed you’re already more ransomware-savvy than the majority of users. For more information on backups, feel free to check out our article on the topic: http://blog.emsisoft.com/2016/08/29/the-smartest-way-to-stay-unaffected-by-ransomware-backup/

Like after a long Windows update series for example.

Things I want to keep I save on a memory stick and external drive, as my laptop might fail eventually any time the future. And my backups are saved on an external drive so even in case I would have no access to the Internet, I still have access to the backup.

So basically I only make a backup once a month after downloading-installing Windows updates, and sporadically in between.

Of course I always do an anti-malware scan before making a backup… I don’t want to backup malware.
; )

The maximum is that you lose 1 week of data if you are supposed to take a backup tomorrow and the ransomware strikes today. Its safe on an external drive :)

I backup to an xternal drive which I disconnect after backing up.
Correct me if I`m wrong but the worst case scenario is that I lose 1 week of work, yes?
Thanks.

Ransomeware can harm anyone, anytime. So its better to take a backup every day, instead of every week! Taking a backup to an online cloud storage is the best option. Another option is to take a backup into a device, which doesnt have internet, or which is protected by a competent antivirus and/or anti Malware solutions. But remember, prevention is always better than cure, thats means to protect your work device with a competent ‘paid’ anti malware solutions!
